What it's like to be in their boots

Today’s video blog is the first of a three-part series titled, “In Their Boots.” This video features KDOT and KTA highway workers explaining what motorists would see, hear and feel if they were in a work zone, inches from traffic.

The highway workers also share a few basic safety tips for driving through work zones.

To all of you who work alongside the highways, thank you for everything you do to construct and maintain our roadways. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

  1. Having spent much of my life working along the highway I can tell you how important situational awareness in work zones is for motorists. One moment of inattention by a motorist can lead to tragedy.

  2. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and continuing to go back out there. We couldn't do what we do without each of you. We see you.

  3. The worst days in a 30+ year career are the days you learn a colleague has been injured or killed in a work zone. Let's ALL work together for no more awful days!!!!

  4. Tell the public when they are stopped in the roadway for a flagger or signals, to leave enough room in front of themselves; watch the traffic behind them and use their preplanned escape path should a rear end collision be eminent.

  5. Highway workers are the unsung heroes that keep Kansas moving. Thank you for bringing awareness to what you face every day. I hope people will take the advice of imagining their own sons, daughters, grandkids, etc., in those work zones and SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER. Like one of them said, we all want to go home safely at the end of the day.
