As
a construction inspector for H.W. Lochner for over 26 years, I have observed
numerous accidents and near misses by both the traveling public and the
construction crews performing the work. The majority of the accidents could
have been avoided if people were more aware of their surroundings.
One
of the most recent close calls that I remember was on the U.S. 77/K-18 new diamond
interchange. The contractor had all of the traffic control in place to allow
for the permanent striping of a section of roadway that was five-lanes wide
with the center lane being hashed out.
They
closed the inside three lanes of traffic with trim lines and all of the traffic
was split out on the outside two lanes. They striped all of the long lines and
normalized traffic. The center lane chevrons were striped with a hand sprayer
mounted to the truck. The construction crew and inspection staff were working
inside the double yellow center lane with a mobile operation. As the paint truck was going to the next
location, I requested it to come back and redo one of the locations.
As
I ran out from behind the truck to stop the driver, I found myself face to face
with an oncoming vehicle. The vehicle was paying attention and was aware of
their surroundings, but I was not. I had become comfortable with the closed
work zone area we had been working in. This shook me up for a bit and I will
certainly not forget it.

Clinton, as you are well aware, situational awareness is critical in a work zone. Thanks for your candor.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good reminder about safety and to pay attention whether you're in a vehicle or near vehicles. Glad you are ok - thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteReally insightful post—thanks for sharing this. It’s a strong reminder of how quickly situations on the road can turn dangerous, especially when facing an oncoming vehicle. Defensive driving and staying alert are absolute musts. Over here in Logan, Queensland, we often see vehicles written off due to accidents like this, and many end up in scrap metal Logan yards for recycling. Posts like this definitely help raise awareness and encourage safer driving habits. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThis post is a great reminder that even experienced road workers and regular drivers can have close calls when they stop paying attention, and it highlights how quickly things can go wrong when someone is too comfortable with the situation on the road. It made me think about how every driver has a role in keeping others safe, from watching the road to following traffic controls at all times. On a related note, living in a busy area where older vehicles often get replaced after accidents, I have seen many people turn to services like Cash for Cars North Brisbane to responsibly remove and deal with vehicles that are no longer safe to drive, which helps keep local roads clear of hazards.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post because it shows how cars can be more than just machines; they can be part of our memories and even a bit of art with the right look and colour. It is interesting how something as simple as a paint shade can make a vehicle speak to people in such different ways. Reading this made me think about all the stories old cars carry, and how sometimes when they are no longer roadworthy, services like Cash for Wrecked Cars Townsville help owners move on in a way that still respects the history of their vehicle.
ReplyDeleteThis account really drives home how quickly things can go wrong on the road when focus slips even for a moment, and it makes you think about how important it is to respect every sign and signal we see while driving. Stories like this remind all of us that the road can be unpredictable, and every driver has a part to play in keeping others safe. It also made me think about how, in busy regional towns, vehicles that have been in accidents sometimes need to be removed and dealt with responsibly, which is where services like Ford Wreckers Townsville support local drivers when their cars can no longer be used.

This story really highlights how quickly a normal day on the road can turn serious when someone else makes an error, and it reminds everyone that focus and respect for other drivers is always important. When a vehicle is involved in a crash and can no longer be driven, many owners look for options to remove it responsibly and recover some value, which is why terms like Cash for Cars Sydney come up often in discussions about dealing with vehicles that are no longer on the road.
